Grown on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Mandheling is known as much for its smooth, full body (mouthfeel) as its rich, complex taste. Sumatra Mandheling tasting notes often describe it as earthy and intense with an herbal aroma, unique to the region due to the volcanic soil that the coffee is grown in, and not found in South American or African coffees. With just enough acidity to provide a vibrancy, Mandheling coffee often exhibits tones of sweet chocolate and liquorice.
Though Mandheling coffees are dry processed, the method includes washing the dried husk of the coffee cherry (fruit) in hot water which provides a more uniform appearance of the coffee beans than typical dry processed green coffee beans. This unique Sumatran process results in a trademark flavour profile (low acidity and a richness that lingers on the back of the palate) and gives the green beans a signature dark colour.
We buy Grade 1 Sumatra as Double-Picked (DP) or Triple-Picked (TP), referring to the number of times the coffee is hand-picked for defects. This extra quality control results in a very consistent cup including only cherries at optimum ripeness.
We feel that this is one of the best coffees to use in our One Cup Drip Filter packs
